July 20, 2020 Solid gold Jewellery, can you polish it – YES!
What is the fastest way to clean my solid gold jewellery?
Here are our quick tips on how to keep your gold, diamonds or precious stones within your gold piece(s) looking fresh without having to bring it into a jeweller on a regular basis.
If you haven’t had the chance to check out our How to Polish Silver Jewellery blog post we suggest you do for some natural and simple go to tips and tricks.
Gold usually doesn’t need much maintenance and here I recommend a natural and quick way to go about cleaning and polishing up your pieces.
The first option: Dish Soap
not just used for removing grease and grime 😉
The things you will need:
- An old toothbrush
- Dish Soap
- Clean dry towel or paper towel
For this you will need an old toothbrush, dish soap and a towel for drying. Simply put dish soap onto the old toothbrush, add a little water and start scrubbing your gold jewellery. You will see how quickly your pieces will come back to life. Once you are 100% satisfied with how clean they are, take your towel and dry thoroughly.
Now in a pinch if you find that your jewellery still has gunk caught between the stone settings, you can always go back to the original polishing method that I use for cleaning silver; which is baking soda, aluminum foil and hot water. Let it soak and watch the gunk come out.
The second option: Professional Polishing
Usually I recommend this process for gold pieces that have been worn for a few years. Gold as its worn can get scratches on the surfaces causing the it to look dull. This is when I would suggest bringing your gold pieces into a jeweller where they can use a thing called a “polishing wheel” to smooth out the surface and make your gold pieces look brand new. However, after your jewellery has been polished a number of times, the effects accumulate and the structure of your piece(s) of jewellery can become weaker. Of course that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have your jewellery polished, you just shouldn’t do so too often. I would recommend every one to two years.
